Portugal’s largest natural reef

The Armação de Pêra reef is Portugal’s largest natural reef and is thought to date back tens of thousands of years, to the original formation of our historic coast.

The Armação de Pêra reef is Portugal’s largest natural reef and is thought to date back tens of thousands of years, to the original formation of our historic coast.

Around four miles off the coast, with depths between 12 and 22 meters, the reef stretches from northwest to southeast over seven nautical miles from the Alfanzina Lighthouse, near Carvoeiro to the edge of Galé, in Albufeira. It dates back almost 30, 000 years ago, when the sea level would have been about 20 metres high, According to the theory, the ancient coastline eventually fossilised, creating the natural reef. Today, due to its geographic location, it is suitable for scuba diving all year round and is recognised as one of the top diving locations in the region, with numerous scientific studies often undertaken there.

The reef gives scientists fascinating insights into the original Algarve coastline, and marine biologists believe that it houses 70% of the species indigenous to the coastline, as well as 45 species newly discovered in Portugal and, incredibly, 12 species newly discovered in the world.

The incredible biodiversity of the reef has led to an effort to classify it as a Marine Protected Area, helping to promote natural conservation and a sustainable future for the local fishing community. As part of this larger commitment to minimise the impact we have on this unspoiled stretch of coastline, Vila Vita Parc feels a responsibility to use sustainable methods and principles as we drive to pioneer eco-tourism at our Armação Beach Club. Life is better by the beach, so we want to make sure that it lives on for future generations to enjoy.
